Co-founder Daniel Barenboim receives Marion Dönhoff Prize

On December 1, Daniel Barenboim was awarded the Marion Dönhoff Prize, given annually to individuals who foster international relations through cultural initiatives. Barenboim was chosen as the 2013 recipient for his work with the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, which he founded in 1999 with Edward Said. The prize is supported by the Marion Dönhoff Stiftung, established in 1988 in honor of Marion Dönhoff, a Nazi resistor who later became editor-in-chief of Hamburg-based newspaper Die Zeit. The foundation was created with the goal of improving German–Eastern European relations in the final years of the Cold War. The honor also receives support from ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius, which, in addition to funding various scientific and cultural projects, is dedicated to music education.
