The West-Eastern Divan Orchestra – an experiment in coexistence founded in 1999 by Daniel Barenboim and Edward Said – unites this October for concerts in Granada and Málaga, Spain as well as the United Nations headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.
For their October concerts, the Divan performs an all-Mozart program comprising the Symphony in E-Flat Major, KV 543; Symphony in g minor, KV 550; and Symphony in C Major, KV 551, "Jupiter". The first concert takes place October 28 at Granada's Auditorio Manuel de Falla. On October 29, they reprise the program in Málaga at the Teatro Cervantes. Co-founder Daniel Barenboim conducts.
On October 31, the Divan and Barenboim give a performance in Geneva at the United Nations, where they will present a "Concert for the Understanding of Civilizations and Human Rights." The performance comes at the invitation of the UN Director-General and UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, and will be attended by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Broadcast details will soon be announced.
